John Callaghan was the first son of William Callaghan and Mary Condon.  As such, he was named after his paternal grandfather.  He was born on May 11, 1862 in Alton, Illinois, and was baptized at Sts. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church on the same day.  Unfortunately, he did not survive three weeks.  He was buried on June 1, 1862, at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery under the name Joseph (Josephum).
